E042 - Class: Half- Casters, All Fun - Rangers: A Guide to Guides
Monday Nov 11, 2019

In this week's episode of the It's A Mimic! podcast, the panel of Dungeon Masters heads out of the city and into the untamed wilderness of Dungeons & Dragons to discover all they can about what makes Rangers a worthwhile class to play. After breaking down the basic class, they explore the Hunter and Beast Master subclasses, and then discuss the Revised Ranger option from Unearthed Arcana. As usual with the class breakdowns, the DM's look at the strengths and weaknesses of the class, before they round out the episode with their own creative builds.
From animal companions to whirlwind attacks, Adam, Dan, and Terry dig into all that the Player's Handbook has to offer on Rangers, including the direction their class-exclusive spells hint toward, and when to start thinking about multiclassing out of the class. The group hammers home the need for Dungeon Master collaboration and meta-game decisions with this class, and even offers up some alternative homebrew rules to make Rangers a little more relevant. So tune in and enjoy another episode of the It's A Mimic! podcast, where you never know what you're going to get!

I agree the ranger was probably actually written first not only is it the weakest but it's also written to where the Beast Masters were Drizzit. who in the 1e books (where he sprang essentially wasn't able to get above 6 if he was decent maybe 14th if he had like God like abilities, IIRC probably much of Drizzit was written on a very different scale. so when they reset the classes to 20 for everyone he either sucks or everyone else sucks because they have to be under him.

Hide in plain sight feels like a hunger games thing meaning the Hunger games participants are 10th plus level rangers?

Beastmaster is the Grizzly adams for the 90's show wise but the beastmaster is only his sidekick Jack with his one mule #8....

ranger alchemy/herbalism is a pretty good idea, tying into the Aragorn/Athlas from Tolkien.

octopus guys, smarter than pigs and dogs, they are exceptional problem solvers even tying knots underwater. you guys really need to deep dive into beasts at some point. Also great for your pirate/seaman build.
