I would like to see the Sleen (2eAD&D Dragon magazine stuff) trying to take over Mechanus, by recruiting Warforged. That could be very interesting campaign.

The town guard is a warforged, but they need a house, but they can’t abuse their power over humans, so they are a quest giver for having a domicile stocked by hiring the players to take from the local dungeon to stock their house.

So the smart tactic for the general would be to personally attack, get destroyed, their subordinates get leveled then the ‘new’ general attacks, lather rinse repeat,

So the clockwork characters are useful because they are a realistic pause button on the particular point of the dungeon. In that they don’t change. The environment might change around them, but they are paused until this specific event occurs so you can have you know 4 o’clock work things in a 10 x 10 room dungeon and you don’t ask questions about why are they still here? they are outside of ecological issues like food and drink so it makes dungeon stuffing easier.
